Meet our Staff

Our staff are all proud Namibians.  We embrace our cultural diversity, and our staff ethnic backgrounds reflect this policy: from Herero, Ovambo, Bushman (San), White, Nama and more.

Our History

Namibia was a colony of Imperial Germany and was known as German South-West Africa before independence in 1990.  Many Germans arrived in the country from the 19th century onwards, to farm with sheep in cattle, and to this day cities such as Windhoek, Swakopmund, Lüderitzbucht and Tsumeb have strong German influences.

When they arrived, they did so in circumstances that would be almost unimaginable in todays standards of living.  Consider for instance that Namibia has no perennial rivers in its interior; the Kunene (northern border with Angola) and the Orange (southern border with South Africa) Rivers are the only perennial rivers.  Arable land therefore accounts for only 1% of the land.  After Mongolia, Namibia is the least densely populated country in the world.

When the present owners of Tawana Safaris acquired the property, it consisted of eight different cattle farms and was subdivided by fences, paddocks and farmworker’s fences.  All this land was consolidated in 1969 into one cohesive Nature Reserve.  The vastness of the area (42 000 ha) is such that one is very likely to walk here where no human footprint has fallen before.
